Refund policy

Bitcoin doesn't refund its blocks. Where we can, we do.

Last updated · 14 February 2026 · Version 2.1

i. Before inscription

Until we queue your encrypted proof for manual inscription work, you can cancel for a full refund, no questions asked. Email [email protected] with your order number.

ii. After inscription, before shipping

Once your encrypted proof has been recorded to Bitcoin, that proof cannot be undone. We can still refund the physical production and shipping portion of your order if you cancel before we begin printing or assembly.

  • The Letter ($29) → refundable until digital delivery has been scheduled or sent
  • The Anniversary ($89) → partial refund available before printing and mailing
  • The Heirloom ($199) → partial refund available before printing, boxing, and tracked mailing

The non-refundable portion covers manual preparation already completed, Bitcoin proof costs already incurred, and any physical materials or shipping we have already purchased.

Why we can't refund the inscription itself.

Bitcoin's permanence is the value we're paying for. Once a block is mined, the data is replicated worldwide and the network fee has been paid to miners — there is no party who can return it. This is the same architecture that makes your letter outlast everything else; we can't have it both ways.

iii. After shipping

Once the card is in the mail, refunds are at our discretion. Common situations we accommodate:

  • Card lost in transit — we'll ship a new card with the same key, no charge. (The inscription itself is unaffected; only the physical key carrier is replaced.)
  • Card damaged in transit — same: new card, no charge.
  • Card arrives defective (illegible recovery code, broken seal) — same: new card, no charge.

What we can't do: replace a card after it has been delivered and accepted. The card is the only carrier of the decryption key. Once it has left our control we cannot regenerate the key.

iv. Buyer's remorse

If you wrote something you regret, we cannot remove it from Bitcoin. We can suggest:

  • Destroying the card before it's opened, which renders the letter unrecoverable in practice.
  • Inscribing a follow-up letter that supersedes the first — the original ciphertext remains on-chain but only the new card carries a usable key.

v. How to request a refund

Email [email protected] with your order number (format ETL-2026-XXXX). We aim to respond within one business day. Approved refunds reach your card within 5–10 business days.
